How your Internet Connection Impacts your VoIP Phone System

Broadband quaility is the root cause of most problems with non-commercial voip installs. If you currently use VoIP and have quality issues, this would be a place to start investigating.

Broadband refers to your company office internet connection. It could be:
  • xDSL
  • Wireless
  • Satellite
  • Cable
  • Fiber
  • MPLS
  • LTE/3G/4G
  • or a combination of the above

Helia provides the appropiate WAN connection based on your organizations size and requirements and configure these services for you. For single person Satilite offices a commercial grade DSL is usually sufficient for companies under 14 we recommend a dedicated DSL connection.

MPLS - Multiprotocol Label Switching

MPLS is a type of managed DSL service that can provide better network performance for telecom networks. For companies with more than 14 phones, we recommend a managed internet connection like MPLS.

Diagnosing Internet Issues with VoIP

Adequate bandwidth is required for quality VoIP calls. In general, each phone call takes about 100k of bandwidth. To find out what kind of connection you have, visit the www.SpeedTest.net website and run the test. There are two aspect to the speed. Upload and Download speed. Upload and download speed are equally important for VoIP and upload speed is always slower. Presuming no other traffic on your internet connection like web browsing, internet radio, drop box, etc, you can handle 1 call for each 100k of available upload and this is best to over-estimate.

The second test is for latency and jitter. Use the www.PingTest.net website to determine these for your network. Here in Alberta its typical to see a ping test of 40 ms and jitter of 2-3ms. As you see the ping test exceeding 100ms you will notice the office asking about people taking over each other on a phone call. If jitter raises much above 5 ms, you will notice that phone calls are terminated prematurely and there are drop out in the sound during a call. You may also notice that the DTMF for auto attendant and IVR is not working properly.
